My week 9-16 June

What did I learn this week, academically and personally?

Academically - watched 6 recorded classes for Diploma (due to late enrolment). I have learned drawing techniques, how to understand plans, ink pen widths, the Rose Seidler house, interior design basics and much more.

Also completed a bunch of online quizzes for the Intro to Design course (see next post) and learned that I'm awesome ;).

Realised that I could photocopy my tracing of the Rose Seidler House for Graphic Comms whilst watching the recording of week 2 . I had gone out and bought tracing paper, googled 'how to trace' and had then traced the picture and graphited the back onto art paper and had a very sketchy impression to work with.

I went to the Design Show Saturday at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and learned so many excellent things. Particularly enjoyed a talk on AI and design by a guy from MC&Co and furiously took down many good quotes and ideas. Also enjoyed the end of a presentation about merging neuroscience with design. Also a great presentation on lighting. Chatted to fabric and wallpaper people, furniture makers, a dementia consultant for designers and touched many MANY different surfaces, coverings, samples and collected brochures galore for Product Knowledge next trimester!!

I was disappointed with the amount of lighting stalls at the show. And found the 'Textile Village' to be a bit snobby! And bland! Except for the Kate Nixon & Quercus & Co stall which had INCREDIBLE wallpaper and furnishing fabrics custom made in Sydney. Also met the designer and grabbed a lot of samples I plan to use next time I make a card :)

Personally, I had a healing breathwork session that I had been putting off as previous session I uncovered some past trauma that needed to be 'let out'. In preparation I met with my therapist, journalled and when the time came, it wasn't so scary. I gained more trust in myself. And let go with love and compassion.

Challenges

Needed to buy a new laptop and dip into emergency funds. Learned a lot about intel i5 and i7 differences. Graphics cards, prices and specs for multiple laptops at different places.

Getting birthday presents for daughter on a budget! I resolved with creativity and spending time with her (as her love language is quality time which I struggle with).

Dentist appointment was depressing/ challenging but I did it!

Bloody coaches replacing trains challenge!!! Decided to get train to the big smoke for the first time so I could relax, catch up on emails, nap etc. My daughter lives right in the heart and parking near her place is a nightmare so in my 'wisdom' I thought I would see what the train journey is like. I discovered that MYKI cards cost $6 for a stupid bit of plastic, and had to change to a coach at East Pakenham and what takes me 2 hours to drive took over 3 hours. And I had a man next to me on the coach back that evening who snorted and coughed and sneezed and SNORTED the entire way.

Successes & Strengths

Got final result for the marketing subject I did in Term 1B and was very happy with an HD. Prior to doing that subject, it had been 20 years since I had done any formal study and was worried I might struggle so relieved that I've still got it!

Although I missed the first 2 weeks of classes for all but Intro to Design, I have managed my time and planned out the trimester and all the assessment due dates and feel confident that I will catch up.

My daughter turned 27 this week and raising her is my greatest success in life. I had her when I was 21 and raised her single handedly with absolutely zero support and she is an incredible woman today who is intelligent, compassionate, worldly, funny, and just so loveable. She is a massage therapist who is enrolled to study nursing next month. She keeps me up[dated on what the kids are into these days and we rarely agree on what looks good when we go shopping! Our styles are different - she dresses like a 90s Nick Cave fan and her house is Nana- Cottage style. I suppose I'm dressing pretty 70s these days and my home is rather 70s too!!

I have found all of the items I need from the art kit much cheaper - one of my greatest strengths is in researching and finding the best value items for my money! Very pleased that I found a new laptop that met all the specs for $780 too!!

Another success/ strength observed this week was as a Narcotics Anonymous sponsor. One of my sponsees celebrated 2 years clean and sober this week and so many people turned up to congratulate her and I felt immense pride in her as I know how hard she has worked. I also helped another sponsee get into the local Youth rehab and acted as her 'worker' and she is absolutely flourishing and in contact with me every day. Seeing my sponsees grow brings me so much joy. Its not exactly 'my success' but I have strengths that make me a shithot sponsor ;)

Application (how can I apply what I have learned)
I plan to document all the brochures from the Design Show so I can refer back.
I have made multiple copies of my traced Rose Seidler house for Graphic Communication so I can practice my pen techniques and experiment with different renderings - watercolours, pencils, markers etc.

I've had extensive chats with my partner who is a carpenter/ builder about reading plans, set squares, scale rulers and all the things I am learning that intersect with his knowledge.

Areas for improvement
My physical health/ self care has gone by the wayside of late. Need to make time for exercise and eating better!

Goals for the coming week
Do at least 2 classes at the gym, cook dinner at home every night, get 2 assignments in on time,
